ENGLISH Chaharshanbe Siri is an ancient zoroastrian tradition where people would jump over fires lightened in the streets on the last Wednesday of the Persian year. This is a purification ritual where the redness of the fire is absorbed by the human body and the paleness of the body is given to the fire. In the little town of Higueras, people would also jump over the fires they started in their streets during “The Luminarias” festival on mid December each year.

Diego de Montemayor, a Spanish Sephardic Jew from Malaga, Spain founded the city of Monterrey in northern Mexico in 1596. Before his foundation, two Portuguese settlers made attempts to found the city. They were Alberto del Canto (born in the Azores islands) and Luis de Carvajal y de la Cueva (born in Mogadouro). Many of the first settlers were also Sephardic Jews who did not convert to Catholicism and were unfortunately judged by the Spanish Inquisition in Mexico City. Hernán Galindo directed a theater play to commemorate the city’s 427th Anniversary based on Gabriela Riveros’ historical novel “You will forget the fire” remembering the unfortunate destinies of some of Luis de Carvajal y de la Cueva family members .
