ENGLISH

On May 5th, 1862 the young Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza defeated the mighty army of the Second French Empire. Many Mexicans are aware that there is French blood in our veins and they usually assume that their blonde hair or blue eyes comes from those soldiers who stayed in our country. But a few Mexicans realize that many of the French soldiers were not necessarily Europeans. Many soldiers came from the French colonies such as Algeria, Egypt and other African territories. All this blending (which in Spanish we call “mestizaje”) is what makes Mexico’s diversity rich!

Puebla 158

Puebla
