ENGLISH

Mexico’s president AMLO commemorated 500 years of indigenous resistance since Tenochtitlan’s fall (today Mexico City) as he apologized to Mexico’s indigenous peoples for the cultural disruptions brought by the Spanish colonization. The ceremony took place at Mexico City’s zócalo where his wife hosted two native North Americans (one from Canada and the other from the USA). Also, a replica of the fire and water pyramids was constructed at the center of this very famous square.

Olympic Colors: many people believe that each colorful ring represents one of the 5 continents in our World (blue for Africa, yellow for the Americas, black for Asia, green for Europe & red for Oceania). However, the true reason is that at least one of the 5 colors in the olympic flag appear in the flags of each country in the World! The Mexican delegation also exported the colors of the southern state of Oaxaca worn by each athlete on their outfit.

Mexico and its historical connection to Oceania

ENGLISH
Mexico started its connection with Oceania back in the colonial days when it was called New Spain. Several maritime expeditions left the seaports of de San Blas in today’s state of Nayarit, Barra de Navidad in today’s state of Jalisco, as well as Zihuatanejo & Acapulco in today’s state of Guerrero. Navigators such as Miguel López de Legazpi, Ruy López de Villalobos & Francisco Antonio Mourelle not only reached the Philippines but also discovered far away islands in Oceania such as Tonga. Spain and Mexico have honored these sailors by publishing interesting sets of postage stamps.
