Thanks to the United Nations General Assembly, since December 1994 more than 370 million indigenous people in around 70 countries celebrate the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on August 9th. Some topics appreciated during the celebrations are language, traditions and environmental protection.

Gracias a que en diciembre de 1994 la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas decidiera que el 9 de agosto se celebrara a las poblaciones indígenas del mundo, hoy en día más de 370 millones de personas festejan sus creencias, lenguajes y costumbres en más de 70 países.

Fifty years ago men landed on the moon. Did you know that a Mexican man designed the logo for Apollo 11? His name is Hector Hernandez and he comes from the southern state of Oaxaca.

Mexico’s Revolutionary Institutional Party (PRI) stayed in power for 71 years (1929-2000) being the only country with a single party ruling the country for such a long time. It started as PNR (National Revolutionary Party). This year the Communist Party of China will complete 70 years in power. It will soon tie Mexico’s world record.

Although Monterrey is Mexico’s 3rd largest city, it has the country’s tallest building and it will soon have Latin America’s tallest building. Only the following 12 countries have taller skyscrapers than Mexico: in Africa (none), in the Americas (USA), in Asia (UAE, China, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Kuwait & Thailand), in Europe (Russia & England) & in Oceania (Australia).

I hope both of these women win the Oscar to Best Actress tonight for their outstanding performances. Glenn Close has never won an Oscar throughout her rich acting career and Yalitza Aparicio had a great debut in her acting experience. Yalitza is a Mexican woman of Mixtec ancestry who is fluent in Spanish & learned Mixtec.

Mis favoritas a llevarse el Óscar para mejor actriz son…Glenn Close y Yalitza Aparicio. Ojalá y empaten pues la veterana Glenn Close nunca ha ganado un Óscar y Yalitza tuvo un excelente debut como actriz. Yalitza es una joven mexicana de origen mixteco que habla el español y aprendió el mixteco.

If you spell the word Roma backwards you get the word Amor (Love in Spanish). This movie which takes place in a Mexico City neighborhood called Roma (after the Italian capital city) is full of love. The main character is Clio (played by Yalitza Aparicio, a kindergarten teacher). Clio is a Mixtecan maid that comes from the southern state of Oaxaca working in the largest city in the World. She represents a “motherly” figure which many of us in Mexico who grew up with a maid are familiar with. The movie has polarized Mexicans. Many are happy that Yalitza has been nominated for an Oscar in the “Best Actress Category” but others are criticizing her for her lack of acting experience, her ethnicity and even for her appearance. In real life, Yalitza is a very smart and lovely person who has dealt in a very elegant way against prejudice.

La palabra Roma al revés es Amor. La película de Alfonso Cuarón revela un personaje llamado Clio y que está lleno de amor que se desenvuelve ante ambientes carentes de amor como un divorcio familiar así como un año turbulento políticamente hablando para México. En la película Clio es una empleada doméstica de origen Mixteco que trabaja con una familia de clase media de la Colonia Roma de la Ciudad de México. En la vida real Yalitza Aparicio efectivamente pertenece a la etnia Mixteca del estado de Oaxaca pero se dedica a la enseñanza de infantes siendo educadora en el kindergarten. Su nominación al Oscar como “Mejor Actriz” ha sido recibida de manera polarizada por los mexicanos. Lo importante es que la actuación de una paisana nuestra está siendo reconocida a nivel mundial y eso nos debería dar gusto.

In 1947 Mexican painter Diego Rivera introduced Chiutlahua (the woman in yellow) as a brave woman who demanded her rights to enter Mexico’s City Alameda Park originally reserved for the “right people” reflecting Mexico’s discriminatory society. Today, Yalitza Aparicio goes beyond “Alameda” entering the World stage and becoming an role model for Mexico and the World showing that success can be achieved with an open mind, effort, determination & team work. She is the first indigenous woman ever to be nominated for an Oscar in the “Best Actress” category along with Glenn Close & Lady Gaga. Her international success sets an example for our young generations around the World and hopefully in Mexico!

Chiutlahua, la mujer de amarillo que aparece en el mural pintado por Diego Rivera en 1947, se enfrenta a una sociedad clasista y racista que no le permite entrar a la Alameda frecuentada por la “gente bien”. Hoy en día Yalitza Aparicio ha dado un claro ejemplo de que sí se pudo entrar y llegar más allá de la Alameda…¡sus logros internacionales son un ejemplo a seguir para todos los mexicanos! Total Eclipse of the…Moon!

Last week we experienced in Mexico a total eclipse of the moon. So the “rabbit that lives in the moon” (according to ancient Mayan tales) was gone for a while. Although the eclipse was not seen in Asia, did you know that the Chinese also have a tale about a “rabbit living in the moon”? What an interesting coincidence!

Hace una semana presenciamos en México un espectacular eclipse total de la luna así que el “conejo que vive en la luna” (de acuerdo a los mitos mayas) se desapareció por unos instantes. Aunque el eclipse no fue visto en Asia, los chinos también tienen el mito del “conejo que vive en la luna”. ¡Qué interesante coincidencia!
