I hope both of these women win the Oscar to Best Actress tonight for their outstanding performances. Glenn Close has never won an Oscar throughout her rich acting career and Yalitza Aparicio had a great debut in her acting experience. Yalitza is a Mexican woman of Mixtec ancestry who is fluent in Spanish & learned Mixtec.

roma_1_0ENGLISH

If you spell the word Roma backwards you get the word Amor (Love in Spanish). This movie which takes place in a Mexico City neighborhood called Roma (after the Italian capital city) is full of love. The main character is Clio (played by Yalitza Aparicio, a kindergarten teacher). Clio is a Mixtecan maid that comes from the southern state of Oaxaca working in the largest city in the World. She represents a “motherly” figure which many of us in Mexico who grew up with a maid are familiar with. The movie has polarized Mexicans. Many are happy that Yalitza has been nominated for an Oscar in the “Best Actress Category” but others are criticizing her for her lack of acting experience, her ethnicity and even for her appearance. In real life, Yalitza is a very smart and lovely person who has dealt in a very elegant way against prejudice.

Even-though Mexico has been celebrating the “Day of the Dead” during hundreds of years, the “Day of the Dead Parade” started this year due to last year’s James Bond movie SPECTRE. Thanks to the international movie industry Mexican traditions are getting well known around the world and at the same time we Mexicans are appreciating our traditions deeply remembering and keeping them alive each year.96.jpg

Multicultural TV Shows in Mexico

ENGLISH

In 1997 when I left Mexico to live in Asia there were only a couple of Cultural & Educational TV Channels in the country. However, Mexico’s first travel show MOCHILA AL HOMBRO (Carrying your Backpack) trigger around the world the production of other Travel Shows and even Travel TV Channels! Nineteen years later Mexico has quadrupled its amount of Cultural & Educational TV Channels supporting the appreciation of domestic and international cultural diversity! Some TV Shows such as LA LLEVA (Taking you to…) promotes domestic travel amongst Mexican children who visit other children in order to appreciate and learn from other regional cultures. It also promotes friendship and the “opening of minds” to enrich the children’s mindset. There are also TV Shows such as ¿PORQUE EN MEXICO? (Why in Mexico?) in which foreigners are interviewed seeking to understand the reasons they have chosen Mexico as their home. This TV show along with LOS QUE LLEGARON (Those who arrived) reveal the appreciation foreigners have about Mexican lifestyle, Mexican Culture and the gifts Mother Nature has given Mexico with is huge variety of climates! Another type of TV show is that in which the life experiences of Mexicans living abroad is introduced such as LA LISTA DE ERICK (Erick’s Bucket List). Erick is a Mexican theater-actor who explores many regions in Russia and introduces Russian culture to the TV audience by connecting directly with the Russian people in each region. There is no doubt that today Cultural & Education TV Channels in Mexico promote both Domestic and International Multiculturalism!

Mexican Movie Directors win the Oscar three years in a row! A reflection of an experienced CQ?

ENGLISH

In 2014 Alfonso Cuarón won the Oscar for Best Director with his movie GRAVITY. In 2015 Alejandro González Iñárritu won best director and best movie with his film BIRDMAN. Again, in 2016 Alejandro González Iñárritu wins the Oscar for his directing skills with his movie THE REVENANT. Emmanuel Lubezki, a Jewish Mexican cinematographer has also won three years in arrow for his photographic & cinematographic skills with the same 3 movies. These three “global” Mexicans have effectively worked abroad with actors and film staff belonging to many nationalities. I wonder if González Iñárritu, Cuarón and Lubezki are aware of their CQ (Cultural Quotient which is a measure that reflects a person’s capability to relate and work effectively across cultures). Due to their international achievements (such as the above movies as well as BABEL, BIUTIFUL, A LITTLE PRINCESS, HARRY POTTER & THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN, etc.), I have a feeling their CQ will be high! Congratulations to these 3 Oscar winners (and also to director Guillermo del Toro) for “generating” success beyond Mexico’s borders!

IMG_9401ESPAÑOL
