During the first presidential daily morning report of the year (known in Mexico as “la mañanera”) a 6.5 earthquake struck southern Mexico being felt in the port of Acapulco in the state of Guerrero and hitting harder Mexico City. President Claudia Sheinbaum reacted calmly and encouraged all the news reporters to evacuate the Presidential Palace and reach a safe spot nearby.

ENGLISH

Nūr, Nūr, Nūr (in farsi)! Ur, Ur, Ur (in Hebrew)! Luz, Luz, Luz (in Spanish)! These three celebrations have LIGHT in common. Yalda is always celebrated during the Winter Solstice; Hanukkah is usually celebrated during December and Christmas on December 25th. In the northern hemisphere, days start having more sunlight right after the Winter Solstice. A pine tree was used during Yalda in ancient times and it is still used in Christmas by many cultures.

ENGLISH

Mexico lost one of its greatest scientists! Julieta Fierro was an activist promoting science amongst the children of Mexico. Her main focus was astronomy. Last week I accidentally bought her book in Yucatan while looking for Latin America’s first science fiction story written in Yucatan by a monk during the 18th Century who had to deal with the Spanish Inquisition for writing about a journey to the moon. May Julieta Fierro rest in peace 1948-2025.
