The winter solstice usually takes place around the 21^stor 22^ndof December. On very rare occasions it takes place on the 20^thor 23^rdof December. Several ancient civilizations have designed constructions such as Stonehenge in England or Edzna in southeastern Mexico to be aware of this astronomical moment highlighting the shortest day of the year. There are also natural landmarks that “embrace” the winter solstice such as the Saddle Mountain located in Mexico’s 3^rdlargest city, Monterrey where the sun comes out right at the center of the “saddle” during the winter solstice.

El solsticio de invierno suele suceder el 21 o 22 de diciembre y en muy raras ocasiones cae el 20 o el 23 de diciembre. En algunos lugares del mundo antiguas civilizaciones han diseñado construcciones que marcan este evento astronómico tales como Stonehenge en Inglaterra o Edzná en Campeche, México para señalar el día mas corto del año. También hay lugares naturales que enmarcan este fenómeno tales como el Cerro de la Silla, localizado en la ciudad mexicana de Monterrey, donde el sol sale justo en la parte central de la “silla” de montar, al cual el nombre del famoso cerro hace referencia.
