Two Mexican films do well at the 77th Venice International Film Festival.

“New Order” is a film by Mexican movie director Michel Franco that won the Grand Jury Prize in Venice. The story deals with the social class differences in Mexico.

Yulene Olaizola’s story “Tragic Jungle” takes place in the 1920’s in the Mexican-Belizean jungle where gum workers encounter a mysterious woman who could be the mythical Xtabay.

Dos películas mexicanas destacan en el 77 Festival Internacional de Cine de Venecia.

“Nuevo Orden” del director mexicano Michel Franco ganó el Gran Premio del Jurado en Venecia. En ella se contrastan las diferencias sociales que hay en nuestro país. Michel Franco también ha dirigido las películas “Después de Lucía”, “600 Millas” y “Las hijas de Abril”.

Yulene Olaizola dirige “Selva Trágica” en cuya historia tiene lugar el encuentro entre trabajadores chicleros y la “Xtabay” allá por los años 1920’s en la selva mexicana-beliceña. La ópera prima de Yulene fue el thriller “Intimidades de Shakespeare y Víctor Hugo”.

Tonight Channel 14 (www.canalcatorce.tv) will start its “Mexican Cinema Fortnight” with these 2 films considered Mexico’s Top 100 Movies. One is called THE GOLDEN CAGE and it deals with immigration and the other one is called INTIMACIES AT SHAKESPEARE & VICTOR HUGO STREETS which reveals a mysterious secret.

Hoy por la noche inicia la quincena del cine en el Canal 14 y su versión “en linea” (www.canalcatorce.tv) donde se proyectarán estas dos excelentes cintas mexicanas que forman parte de la nueva lista de 100 mejores películas mexicanas. LA JAULA DE ORO trata sobre la migración y el documental INTIMIDADES DE SHAKESPEARE Y VICTOR HUGO revela un secreto muy interesante. Les recomiendo mucho la de “mi tocayo”.

Every year on August 15th, Mexico celebrates “Mexican Movies Day”. Since yesterday Channel 22 (Mexican Culture Channel) has been playing CALL ME MIKE (Llámenme Mike), a black humor comedy which was forbidden several years in our country during the 1980’s due to its focus on corruption. Channel 22 will broadcast this movie today August 16th at 3:30 pm CST on its international channel (if you live in Mexico it will be at 2:30pm CST on the national channel). Sasha Montenegro was born in Italy but her parents came from Montenegro, hence her artistic surname. Her real name is Sasha Aćimović Popović. Alejandro Parodi won 4 Ariel Awards (the Mexican Oscar) during his life. He was born in the northwestern state of Sonora yet his family name is Italian.

Cada 15 de agosto México celebra el Día Nacional del Cine Mexicano. Desde ayer el Canal 22 ha estado festejando este día con la comedia de humor negro LLÁMENME MIKE. Esta película estuvo censurada durante algunos años en la década de los 80 por tratar el tema de la corrupción. Hoy 16 de agosto se presentará a las 2:30pm en la transmisión nacional del Canal 22 y a las 3:30pm CST en la transmisión internacional. Sasha Montenegro nació en Italia pero sus padres eran originarios del país balcánico llamado Montenegro (de ahí tomó su apellido artístico). Su nombre real es Sasha Aćimović Popović. El sonorense Alejandro Parodi ganó cuatro Arieles en su vida y curiosamente su apellido paterno también tiene una conexión con Italia.

Discover Mexico’s African roots with Susana Harp a Mexican woman from the southern state of Oaxaca whose ancestors came from Lebanon. The TV show airs every Tuesday at 8:30 pm on Channel 11. Few Mexicans know that along with our Indigenous and Spanish roots, the third root from Africa has influenced our music, dances, gastronomy and language.

I hope both of these women win the Oscar to Best Actress tonight for their outstanding performances. Glenn Close has never won an Oscar throughout her rich acting career and Yalitza Aparicio had a great debut in her acting experience. Yalitza is a Mexican woman of Mixtec ancestry who is fluent in Spanish & learned Mixtec.

Mis favoritas a llevarse el Óscar para mejor actriz son…Glenn Close y Yalitza Aparicio. Ojalá y empaten pues la veterana Glenn Close nunca ha ganado un Óscar y Yalitza tuvo un excelente debut como actriz. Yalitza es una joven mexicana de origen mixteco que habla el español y aprendió el mixteco.

If you spell the word Roma backwards you get the word Amor (Love in Spanish). This movie which takes place in a Mexico City neighborhood called Roma (after the Italian capital city) is full of love. The main character is Clio (played by Yalitza Aparicio, a kindergarten teacher). Clio is a Mixtecan maid that comes from the southern state of Oaxaca working in the largest city in the World. She represents a “motherly” figure which many of us in Mexico who grew up with a maid are familiar with. The movie has polarized Mexicans. Many are happy that Yalitza has been nominated for an Oscar in the “Best Actress Category” but others are criticizing her for her lack of acting experience, her ethnicity and even for her appearance. In real life, Yalitza is a very smart and lovely person who has dealt in a very elegant way against prejudice.

La palabra Roma al revés es Amor. La película de Alfonso Cuarón revela un personaje llamado Clio y que está lleno de amor que se desenvuelve ante ambientes carentes de amor como un divorcio familiar así como un año turbulento políticamente hablando para México. En la película Clio es una empleada doméstica de origen Mixteco que trabaja con una familia de clase media de la Colonia Roma de la Ciudad de México. En la vida real Yalitza Aparicio efectivamente pertenece a la etnia Mixteca del estado de Oaxaca pero se dedica a la enseñanza de infantes siendo educadora en el kindergarten. Su nominación al Oscar como “Mejor Actriz” ha sido recibida de manera polarizada por los mexicanos. Lo importante es que la actuación de una paisana nuestra está siendo reconocida a nivel mundial y eso nos debería dar gusto.
