ENGLISH
Chaharshanbe Siri is an ancient zoroastrian tradition where people would jump over fires lightened in the streets on the last Wednesday of the Persian year. This is a purification ritual where the redness of the fire is absorbed by the human body and the paleness of the body is given to the fire. In the little town of Higueras, people would also jump over the fires they started in their streets during “The Luminarias” festival on mid December each year.

Jumping over the fire in Higueras / Brincando sobre el fuego en Higueras.

ENGLISH

Few people know that the first Jews who established themselves in the American continent did so in New Spain (today Mexico), where they founded the city of Monterrey on September 20th 1596, in the current state of Nuevo Leon. Luis Carvajal y de la Cueva was one of the founders and his nephew, Luis Carvajal “El Mozo” is considered the first Jewish writer in the Americas. Liber Ediciones has published his writings recently.

Kashan, Iran.

ENGLISH

A few Catholic countries, specially those in the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America, celebrate the Three Wise Men Day on January 6th. Early on this day, many catholic children will receive gifts brought by the mystical Persian kings. Adults will gather later on in the afternoon to eat a Wise Men cake (Rosca de Reyes) and those lucky ones, will get a small figurine found inside the cake. These figurines used to be baby Jesus but now the cakes include other figurines such as red headed angels! Some historians believe that the Wise Men were Zoroastrian priests who left, in biblical times, the city of Kashan in today’s central Iran, in search of baby Jesus following a bright star in the sky.

San Pedro Garza Garcia, Mexico.

Seven years before the American movie THE WHALE was produced, Alejandro Guzmán directed a Mexican movie called WALKING DISTANCES (I watched it last month on TV). Both movies are awesome and even though the topic is similar, each movie has its own powerful message!
