Vicente Guerrero Mexico’s first Afromexican president in 1829

Former president Vicente Guerrero was born in Tixtla, Mexico to a mestizo father and an Afro-Mexican mother in 1782. He became president in 1829 and during this year he abolished slavery in Mexico. Today, people in Mexico are becoming aware of our country’s third root: The African Heritage. Most of the Afro-Mexicans today live in the southern states of Veracruz, Guerrero and Oaxaca and also in the northern state of Coahuila.

Vicente Guerrero nació en 1782 en el poblado de Tixtla localizado en al actual estado de Guerrero. Llegó a la presidencia de México en 1829 mismo año en que decretó la abolición de la esclavitud en el país. Su madre era de origen africano. Actualmente la tercera raíz de México esta siendo reconocida por más y más mexicanos. Los estados sureños de Veracruz, Guerrero y Oaxaca así como Coahuila en el norte de México, son los que concentran las poblaciones de afrodescendientes más representativas de la república.

Felipe de Jesús was a Novohispanic Catholic missionary who was born in Mexico City in 1572. He travelled from Acapulco, in present day Mexico to Manila, Philippines on the Manila Galleon in 1589 taking a mercantile career. He became connected with the Franciscans in Manila and in 1596 he was shipwrecked in Japan when he was on his way back to Acapulco The Japanese thought they the friars were on a colonization mission so they were sentenced to death. He was one of the 26 martyrs in Nagasaki. Saint Phillip of Jesus is the first Mexican canonized saint.

Felipe de Jesús fue un misionero católico nacido en la ciudad de México en 1572. Viajó como comerciante hasta Manila, Filipinas zarpando desde Acapulco, hoy México. En las Filipinas se acercó a los franciscanos de Manila y al regresar a Acapulco, una tormenta desvió su barco hacia las costas de Japón donde fue capturado por los japoneses quienes pensaron que los frailes eran parte en una misión colonizadora. Veintiséis frailes fueron martirizados en Nagasaki. San Felipe de Jesús es el primer santo canonizado de México.

Armando Manzanero was born in the southeastern state of Yucatan. His ancestors were Maya. He wrote beautiful romantic songs that belonged to the “Bolero” genre. Many Mexican and Latin-American singers sang his songs. His music is a legacy in the Spanish speaking world!

Armando Manzanero nació en el estado de Yucatán. Sus ancestros eran de origen maya. Compuso muchos boleros memorables mismos que han sido cantados por muchos interpretes mexicanos y latinoamericanos. Su música es un gran y valioso legado para el mundo hispanohablante.

Today Sergio Perez from Guadalajara gave Mexico an enormous moment of joy after earning his first Formula One win at the 2020 Sakhir in Bahrain. Congratulations Checo! Checo is the nickname given to guys named Sergio.

Hoy el tapatío Sergio Pérez le dió a México un enorme momento de alegría al ganar su primer Gran Premio de Fórmula 1 de Sakhir en Baréin. ¡Felicidades Checo! Un claro ejemplo de perseverancia.

Bill Melendez was a character animator and voice actor who provided the voices for Snoopy & Woodstock. He also designed charatcers for Disney’s Bambi, Dumbo, Fantasia & Pinocchio. Melendez was born in Hermosillo, Sonora in northwestern Mexico.

Bill Melendez fue un animador conocido por los dibujos animados que hizo para Warner Brothers y Disney (Bambi, Dumbo, Fantasia y Pinocho). Además dio vida a las voces de Snoopy y Emilio. Melendez nació en Hermosillo, Sonora, México.

Carlos Villatoro: Mexico’s Silent Movies prince

Carlos Villatoro was one of the most famous actors during the Mexican Silent Movie Era in the 1920’s. He left his home state of Chiapas, in southern Mexico, early in his life and on his way to Canada an unexpected train stop in New York City changed his life forever introducing him to the world of acting. He was also an important part of the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema in the 1940’s. A true pioneer!

Antes de Jorge Negrete y Pedro Infante, el chiapaneco Carlos Villatoro engalanó algunas películas del cine mudo mexicano (El tren fantasma y El puño de hierro) en los años 1920’s. Luego participó en películas sonoras como “Águilas de América” y “Dos monjes”, considerada una de las mejores 100 películas de México. Finalmente formó parte del elenco en varias películas de la Época de Oro del cine mexicano con estrellas tales como María Felix. Un viaje inesperado a Nueva York en 1920 cuando Villatoro tenía 17 años fue lo que lo acercó al mundo de la actuación.

Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune didn’t speak a word of Spanish yet he managed to play the main character, an indigenous Mexican from the state of Oaxaca, in the movie ÁNIMAS TRUJANO considered one of the 100 Best Mexican Movies. This film was the 2nd Mexican movie to be nominated at the Oscars under the “Best Foreign Language Film” category in 1962.

El actor japonés Toshiro Mifune, sin hablar una palabra de español, protagonizó en 1961 a un indígena oaxaqueño en la película ÁNIMAS TRUJANO considerada hoy como una de las 100 mejores películas de nuestro país. Esta cinta fue la segunda película mexicana en ser nominada al Óscar como mejor película extranjera.

International Day of the World’s Indigenous People

Today is “International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples”. You can celebrate it by watching Netflix’s documentary about María Lorena Ramírez, a Rarámuri woman from the northern state of Chihuahua, who has placed Mexico on the radar at several international “marathonic” races.

Hoy es el “Día Internacional de los Pueblos Indígenas” y para celebrarlo puedes ver este documental en Netflix que trata sobre María Lorena Ramírez, una interesante corredora rarámuri del norteño estado de Chihuahua que ha puesto el nombre de México en alto en varias carreras “maratónicas” internacionales.
