Mexican Judicial Elections

On June 1st thirteen million Mexicans elected their judicial leaders including Hugo Aguilar, a native Mexican belonging to the Mixtec culture from the southern state of Oaxaca. He will be leading Mexico’s Supreme Court. It is the first time since 1857 that a native Mexican holds this position when Benito Juarez, also from Oaxaca and belonging to the Zapotec culture, was also leader of the Mexican Supreme Court. This election is the first one in the World where judges are elected by popular vote!

El primero de junio del año en curso 13 millones de mexicanos salieron a votar para elegir a los miembros del poder judicial de su país entre los cuales destacó la elección de Hugo Aguilar, oaxaqueño de origen mixteco, quien presidirá la Suprema Corte de Justicia de la Nación. Es la primera vez desde tiempos de Benito Juárez (1857) que un mexicano de origen indígena volverá a ocupar este puesto. Estas elecciones son las primeras en el mundo donde los jueces son elegidos por voto popular.

Documentary on HBO and CNN. / Documental de HBO y CNN.

One of the producers of the movie SUPERMAN was Mexican director Ilya Salkind born in Mexico City on July 27, 1947. His father was Alexander Salkind who was also involved in the the movie production featuring Christopher Reeve. Tonight, CNN will feature a documentary commemorating Christopher Reeve’s participation in the four SUPERMAN movies. Later this year, around the month of July, there will be a new movie about Superman igniting a new era for the DC Superhero.

Uno de los productores de la película SUPERMAN fue el mexicano Ilya Juan Salkind Domínguez nacido el 27 de julio de 1947 e hijo de Alexander Salkind. Ambos estuvieron involucrados en las películas protagonizadas por Christoper Reeve. Esta noche, CNN presentará un documental conmemorando la participación de Christopher Reeve en las cuatro películas de Superman. A mediados del 2025, se lanzará una nueva versión de Superman.

Claudia Sheinbaum is the first woman in Mexico’s 200 year old history to become president! Her paternal grandparents were Ashkenazi Jews who immigrated to Mexico from Lithuania and her maternal grandparents were Sephardic Jews who immigrated to Mexico from Bulgaria. Mexican indigenous women recognized their new president by giving her the “Power Baton”.

Claudia Sheinbaum es la primera mujer presidenta en los 200 años de historia de México. Sus abuelos maternos, judíos sefardíes inmigraron a México desde Bulgaria y sus abuelos paternos, judíos azkenazí lo hicieron desde Lithuania. Mujeres indígenas mexicanas dieron el bastón de mando a la nueva presidenta.

Remembering Emiliano Zapata

On April 10, 1919 Emiliano Zapata was betrayed and assassinated by general Jesus Guajardo. Since that time, every year Zapata’s revolutionary legacy is remembered and honored in all Mexico.

El 10 de abril de 1919 Emiliano Zapata fue asesinado en la hacienda de la Chinameca por el general Jesús Guajardo. Desde entonces, cada año se conmemora la vida y el legado del revolucionario morelense.

Two women will run for president in the 2024 Elections. Xochitl Galvez is a Mexican with native roots coming from the the Hñähñu (Otomi) culture. On the other hand, Claudia Sheinbaum is a Mexican whose grandparents immigrated from Lithuania and Bulgaria.

ESPAÑOL

Dos mujeres aspiran a la presidencia de México. Xóchitl Galvez es mexicana de origen Hñähñu (otomí) mientras que Claudia Sheinbaum es mexicana cuyos abuelos llegaron a México desde Lituania y Bulgaria.

Two states in Mexico had elections to select their respective governors. In the northern state of Coahuila, Manolo Jiménez Salinas won the election representing 3 parties and in the central State of Mexico, Delfina Gómez Álvarez won representing MORENA Party which during the last 5 years, this new party has won more than half of Mexico’s states.

ESPAÑOL

En dos estados mexicanos se tuvieron elecciones para elegir a sus respectivos gobernadores. En el estado norteño de Coahuila el ganador fue Manolo Jiménez Salinas representando a 3 partidos y en el central Estado de México, la ganadora fue la maestra Delfina Gómez Álvarez representando al partido MORENA, que desde hace 5 años, ha ganado más de la mitad de la gobernaturas del país.

Red states represent MORENA Party. Los estados rojos representan al partido MORENA.

During March, Mexico lost great celebrities like movie star Ignacio Lopez-Tarso an icon during Mexico’s Golden Movie Era (1940’s-1950’s); actress Irma Serrano who later went into politics; TV celebrity Rebecca Jones and Mexico’s “eternal kid” Xavier Lopez “Chabelo” who broke two Guinness World Records conducting for 44 years every Sunday morning the family TV show “En Familia” and representing for 57 years the character of Chabelo. Yesterday, Dominican actor naturalized Mexican, Andres Garcia, joined this group of celebrities. May them all rest in peace and thank you for giving Mexicans great memories!

Durante el mes de marzo, México perdió a grandes íconos del cine y la televisión tales como el primer actor del cine de oro mexicano, teatro y televisión Ignacio López Tarso, la actriz y política Irma Serrano, la joven actriz Rebecca Jones y el “eterno” niño Xavier López “Chabelo”, quien rompiera dos record mundiales de Guinness al conducir todos los domingos durante 44 años el  programa infantil “En Familia” y representar durante 57 años al personaje de Chabelo. Ayer el actor dominicano naturalizado mexicano se unió a este selecto grupo de celebridades. Descansen en paz estos grandes personajes que le regalaron a México grande momentos.
