ENGLISH

On June 1st thirteen million Mexicans elected their judicial leaders including Hugo Aguilar, a native Mexican belonging to the Mixtec culture from the southern state of Oaxaca. He will be leading Mexico’s Supreme Court. It is the first time since 1857 that a native Mexican holds this position when Benito Juarez, also from Oaxaca and belonging to the Zapotec culture, was also leader of the Mexican Supreme Court. This election is the first one in the World where judges are elected by popular vote!

ENGLISH

While Mexican pop singer Yuri was singing “EL APAGÓN” last night in a reality singing show in Mexico City, Spain was awakening with a lack of electricity (in Spanish called “el apagón”). The lack of electricity affects everything: traffic lights, transportation systems (airports, train & subways stations), electronic business transactions (including payments with credit cards), food conservation, communication systems (tv, radio, internet). Perhaps boy & girl scouts can apply their survival skills knowledge during this challenging time. Wishing my friends in Spain a fast solution to this chaotic situation.

ENGLISH

This year there was a very interesting coincidence: Hanukkah and Christmas were celebrated on the same date! In the town of Higueras, located in the northeastern Mexican state of Nuevo León, the Luminaries Festival takes place every year. Some members of the Jewish communities in Mexico City and the capital of Nuevo León believe there might be a Sephardic Jewish origin behind this catholic tradition. What do you think?
